Cerritos, CA, February 3, 2003
-- Corelis Inc. today unveiled three new emulators for PMC-Sierra’s
high-performance RM9000x2™ dual 64-bit MIPS-based
multiprocessor. The new ScanICE, ScanICE/PIO and NetICE
emulators all utilize the IEEE-1149.1 standard (JTAG) port on
the PMC-Sierra RM9000x2 to provide access to the on-chip debug
unit allowing users to debug both processors and the on-chip
peripherals. The emulators can also use the on-chip Trace
Buffers to collect traces of instruction execution on each of
the processor cores.
The emulators include a powerful
Windows™ 95/98/NT/2000/XP based source-level debugger. The
ScanICE uses a PCI bus controller that is installed in a PC, the
ScanICE/PIO uses a high performance “intelligent” parallel port
controller, and the NetICE uses a LAN-based (Ethernet)
controller for JTAG emulation access.
The Corelis emulators use the
IEEE-1149.1 (JTAG) standard test access port to access the
internal debug resources available for both of the PMC-Sierra
RM9000x2 processor cores. This eliminates the need for external
pods, thus reducing the cost and electrical loading of the
target system. Since the debug resources used by the emulator
are part of the RM9000x2, the emulator automatically supports
any clock speed at which the target system runs. In addition to
these benefits, the use of the JTAG interface also ensures that
processor access is maintained even when a user’s software
'hangs' or otherwise runs out of control.
Programs and data can be downloaded
to the system RAM through the JTAG port without the need for a
resident loader program or a ROM emulator. The four-wire JTAG
interface allows the emulator to be connected to the RM9000x2’s
dual processor cores, which can be independently accessed. The
emulator also supports multiple RM9000x2’s in a single
boundary-scan chain.
“Corelis brings to PMC-Sierra's
development platform a wealth of experience in high-performance
JTAG emulation and low-cost development tools,” said Rob Reiner,
Product Marketing Manager of PMC-Sierra’s MIPS Processor
Division. “These EJTAG emulators will enhance support for
customers using the RM9000x2 in very demanding and high
performance embedded applications.”
“The introduction of this family of
EJTAG emulators for the PMC-Sierra RM9000x2 will enable the
RM9000x2 to be more easily integrated into embedded designs and
will result in products being brought to market much faster,”
said Jim Rodgers, Technical Marketing Engineer of Corelis. “We
worked very closely with PMC-Sierra during the RM9000x2
development to ensure the highest level of integration and
support for the dual processor cores and multiple RM9000x2
devices in a design.”
Options:
-
A ROM emulation option for the
NetICE allows very fast code download to the target through an
Ethernet interface and also allows the insertion of software
breakpoints in ROM space. Real-time emulation of flash memory
is also supported.
-
In-circuit programming of flash
memory using optional ScanPlus In-System Programming software
with EJTAG emulator speeds the development of boot software.
This optional software can also be used to program CPLDs and
FPGAs in-circuit using industry standard SVF, JAM, J-Drive,
and STAPL program file formats.
As an additional benefit, any of
the Corelis boundary-scan (JTAG) controllers included with the
emulators can be used to provide boundary-scan interconnect
testing. Corelis also has a full suite of boundary-scan test
software available that can be used for interconnect and
functional testing. The ScanICE-RM9000x2, ScanICE-RM9000x2/PIO,
and the NetICE-RM9000x2 are available now. Prices, including
real-time trace, start from $5,950.
