Blackhawk XDS560 Trace System

The Blackhawk™ XDS560 Trace System (XDS560 Trace) is a non-intrusive, hardware-based trace tool for debugging and profiling high-performance, DSP-based applications providing developers with advanced visibility to debug specialized problems that occur in high-performance, real-time embedded applications.  This real-time visibility produces the detailed information needed to determine where complex and intermittent problems occur as well as the ability to analyze, profile, and tune applications for optimal performance.

The XDS560 Trace System ships with a high-performance Blackhawk emulator (with USB, LAN, or PCI bus host interface options) and TI XDS560 Trace module with high-density, 60-pin connector.  Included in the kit are CCStudio v3.3 emulation drivers on CD ROM,  all necessary power and interface cables, and documentation.  A 60e-14t pin converter is also supplied for backwards compatibly to standard debugging of targets that do not have a 60-pin connector.

Features

  • Non-intrusive high-speed data trace

  • Single, independently clocked input channel

  • Independently de-skew data pins on channel initialization

  • Up to 333 MHz data rate (167 MHz dual edge clock)

  • Full integration with CCStudio Advanced Event Triggering (AET)

  • Real-time code and event profiling

  • Customizable output Trace display for post processing analysis

Host Interface Options

  • High-speed USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/sec) host port interface (USB560m)

  • High-speed PCI-bus Half Height/Length host port interface (PCI560)

  • High-speed 10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN host port interface (LAN560)

Benefits

  • Easier, more efficient development

  • Quickly track down extremely complex real-time bugs

  • Find and solve the invisible, most difficult, and intermittent bugs

  • Capture events leading up to system crashes or race conditions

  • Fine-tune algorithms and code performance for best performance

  • Integrated time stamping for a high degree of accuracy

  • Shorten time spent debugging complex, context-sensitive bugs

  • High cache visibility to fix pipeline stalls that would otherwise go unnoticed

  • Increases product quality and stability

Basic Requirements

TI  trace-enabled DSP

The target DSP must support XDS560 trace.  As of this product release, there are 19 TI catalog DSPs available that support the XDS560 Trace System.  They are:

TMS320C6454 TMS320C6455 TMS320C6418 TMS320C6416T
TMS320C6416 TMS320C6415T TMS320C6415 TMS320C6414T
TMS320C6414 TMS320C6413 TMS320C6412 TMS320C6411
TMS320C6410 TMS320DM643 TMS320DM642 TMS320DM641
TMS320DM640 TMS320DM647 TMS320DM648

Visit the TI Web Site to find the latest version of this list or contact TI for information on their trace-enabled DSP device roadmap.

Target boards with trace-enabled DSPs that are available today include:

  • TMS320C6455 SRIO EVM

  • TMS320DM642 EVM

  • TMS320C6416T DSK

60-pin, high-density target board connector

In addition to selecting a DSP that support XDS560 Trace you will need to populate your target board hardware with the correct connector that supports the high-speed interface.  This is a high-density connector available from SAMTEC and it only requires about the same PCB area as the standard TI 14-pin JTAG header.  So fitting it into your board layout should not be a problem.

It is STRONGLY recommended that this connector be used in place of, and not in addition to a 14-pin JTAG connector so that signal integrity remains high to support the high-speed XDS560 Trace interface.  60 to 14-pin adapters are available to support debugging from conventional JTAG emulators.

For more information on the new 60-pin connector and board layout considerations for these high-speed signals, please refer to the TI document, SPRU655.

Upgrade your existing emulator with Trace Capability!

If you already have a Blackhawk emulator, the XDS560 Trace module is now sold separately and can be added to your existing emulator to add powerful tracing capability to your development station.  XDS560 and trace compatibility is limited to certain Blackhawk emulator models.  Please contact us to verify compatibility.
